Venus Williams and Serena Williams are two of the greatest tennis players of all time. Popularly known as Williams sisters, the duo have reformed women’s tennis over the past couple of decades. They broke onto the big stage in the late 90s and took the tour by surprise with their meteoric rise.
Former world number one Paola Suarez gave an insight into her early perceptions of the Williams sisters, back when they turned pro. The Argentine believes that Serena and Venus Williams were a bit too defensive back in those days, mainly because of the conceptions about discrimination they had.
However, Paola Suarez claims that the two sisters engaged with their peers on the circuit as time passed. They are now two of the most respected players on the tour, as they have taken some bold steps to ensure parity in women’s pay. Serena Williams announced her retirement last year, whereas, Venus Williams continues to compete on tour.
Paola Suarez reveals first impression of Venus and Serena Williams
Paola Suarez did not have a great first impression of Serena and Venus Williams, but that did change over the years. The Argentine stated that a part of the duo getting closer to the circuit was to get over their preconceived notions regarding racial discrimination.
“Yes…, it’s that they came to the circuit with all the preconceptions of discrimination and they got a little defensive, but later they will have realized that we were all the same, that like the black North Americans there were South Americans, Russians… They became more flexible and ended up closer to the rest of the players. At first they were surly,” said Paola.
Serena Williams played her last competitive match at the 2022 US Open, as she hung up her racket after a career spanning three decades. The American claimed 23 Grand Slam titles in this period, just one less than Margaret Court’s record of 24 Major titles.
On the other hand, Venus Williams continues to compete on the tour, as she gears up for the upcoming US Open. The veteran has claimed seven Grand Slam titles, with five of those wins coming at her beloved surface at Wimbledon.
