Become a Vassal in Bannerlord

There is only one thing that will decide if you can become or not a vassal in Bannerlord, and that is your Clan Tier (Renown).

To even get the choice to join a faction/kingdom, you first need to reach Clan Tier 2. Until then, you can either be a mercenary (Clan Tier 1) or just wander around doing Mount and Blade things.

Once you do get to Clan Tier 2, you don’t need to do anything special. Others might say that you first need to be a mercenary for the faction you want to join, but that is not true.

When you get the necessary amount of renown (150 Renown = Clan Tier 2) you can just approach any of the faction leaders and ask them to become their vassal (Pledge your allegiance).

They will enthusiastically approve of your service, and you will have to swear an oath of allegiance. Just answer what they want you to answer, and you will become their vassal.

How to Become a Vassal (Reach Clan Tier 2) Fast

There are two fun ways to get 150 Renown in Bannerlord in a matter of either days or, worst case, weeks:

  • Lone Bandit Lord
  • Tournament Champion

Lone Bandit Lord

This method is the most efficient one to get to Clan Tier 2 in no time, but it requires you to be relatively good at archery and horse-riding.

You will need to get a decent bow and a fast horse. If you have just started the game, put all your points in bow and riding.

Now, head over to the territories of a faction you won’t mind that will hate you and start raiding their villages. The best choice would be to ask for their supplies since you can sell them afterward.

You will mostly get around 1 renown per 5 villagers, but since the militia has around 100 to 200 troops, you can get 40 renown in just one battle.

The problem is that there will most likely be archers, so make sure to use the environment to protect yourself from an embarrassing death.

If you constantly raid villages left and right, by yourself, without any companions or an army, you can easily get to Clan Tier 2 in one in-game week.

Tournament Champion

Going around from town to town winning tournaments would not only be a great way of making money but also be a really good way of gaining fame and renown fast in Bannerlord.

You get 3 renown for every won tournament. Of course, this is going to take a really long time if your goal would only be to get to Clan Tier 2, so we are going to add something else to the plan.

Every town that you visit will have gangs controlling various parts of the settlement. By going and killing all the gangs in the city in their hideouts, you can get something from 5 to 7 renown per gang.

But you have to do this by yourself. Preferably with a really good weapon. This can be pretty hard since gangs have around 20 members, but with your tournament gear, this shouldn’t be impossible.

The beauty of this method is that gang-member-kills give the player a lot of renown. Better than the villagers, at least. You will get 1 renown for every 3 to 4 dead gang members.

This method will not take a week, like the last one, but at least you won’t anger anyone, and this can actually be quite a fun challenge for good players who want to test themselves.

That’s everything you need to know about how to become a vassal in Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord!
