Early Life
Michael Christopher White was born on June 28, 1970, in Pasadena, California to fundraising executive Lyla Lee and Mel White, a reverend who had also worked as a writer for religious leaders like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. In 1994, His father came out as gay.
White was raised in a conservative and highly conventional family with no ties to the entertainment industry. However, while he was in second grade, he received his first major inspiration to write. White became fascinated with the concept of becoming a writer himself.
Career Beginnings
The thought of writing as a career remained with White for a long time and he taught himself the fundamentals of screenwriting. He went to the Polytechnic School in Pasadena, an orthodox Christian school. White then enrolled at Wesleyan University with a liberal atmosphere.
During his college years, he found the inspiration he needed to begin writing for on-screen projects. There he met Zak Penn, a struggling screenwriter who saw White’s talent and invited him to move to Los Angeles.
He made the move and his struggle began as well as having begun working professionally by the time he was in his late twenties. In 1998, White started his writing career with the black comedy Dead Man on Campus, which he co-wrote with Michael Traeger.
It earned severely negative reviews yet managed to even out at the box office. Then he went on to write for and produce the tv series Dawson’s Creek, which ran for four seasons and received positive reviews from the start.
Breakthrough
White gained great recognition for his work on the teen comedy-drama series Freaks and Geeks in 1999. However, due to scheduling and time slot concerns, the series was cancelled without a second-season renewal.
White’s major breakthrough came in 2000, when he wrote the black comedy-drama, Chuck & Buck, by himself. White also played the primary role of Buck O’Brien in the film, in addition to writing it.
White was the creator of the soap opera Pasadena, which ran for a season, covering 13 episodes, but was discontinued due to low ratings. White worked as a writer on the critically and commercially successful picture of Orange County in 2002.
Later that year, he penned The Good Girl, which was a critical and commercial victory. In 2003, White played the key role of ‘Ned Schneebly’ in the Jack Black-starring film School of Rock, which he also wrote.
The film was a major commercial and critical success, and it eventually became the most successful film of both Jack Black and Mike White’s careers. By that point, White had established himself as a prolific writer of quirky comic pictures that captivated audiences.
In the following years, he scripted films such as Nacho Libre and Beatriz at Dinner, as well as Year of the Dog, with which he made his directorial debut. White has recently written films such as The Emoji Movie and Pitch Perfect 3.
Recent Projects
In 2021, White wrote, created, and directed The White Lotus, a satirical limited series for HBO. In 2022, he wrote two animated features for Universal Pictures and Illumination. The fourth film in the Despicable Me franchise will be released in July 2024.

“I want to find myself in the other, and the point of it is that there is no other; it is you. That’s the deepest connection you can make in art. I think the worst thing in the world is to take yourself too literally. If the artist isn’t going to be honest, who is going to be honest?.”
