'Help Jack Give Back' Blood Drive honors 5-year old SE Idaho boy ran over last summer

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) "He needed 11 units of blood, which is a pretty significant amount of blood," explains Jack's mother, Amber Peterson. "He was losing blood so fast that I was watching them give him blood on the flight and they were squeezing the bags of blood so they could get it into him

"He needed 11 units of blood, which is a pretty significant amount of blood," explains Jack's mother, Amber Peterson. "He was losing blood so fast that I was watching them give him blood on the flight and they were squeezing the bags of blood so they could get it into him quickly."

It's every parent's worst nightmare.

"We were camping in Island Park, we were riding bikes and Jack pulled over to the side of the road to let a camp trailer pass by," Peterson explains. "I think he lost his footing and he was ran over by both wheels on the back of the trailer."

5-year old Jack Moser, was airlifted to Idaho Falls.

Three flights and two ambulance rides later, he made it to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

During his stay this little boy endured seven surgeries, a feeding tube, and received over 11 units of blood.

To put that into perspective - there are 8-12 pints of blood in the average adult.

"We spent over four months at Primary Children's," Peterson explains.

Jack is now in recovery. Smiling as bright as ever, and not missing a beat.

"He's doing better though! He's in physical therapy 3 times a week and he's walking and running and climbing and doing the things all little boys should do," Peterson explains. "He's not as fast or as graceful but I mean he's doing everything he was before."

With surgeries still ahead, and wounds to still heal.

"He really needed a lot of blood that night and on that flight over, you know you ever don't think about blood donations until you really need it," Peterson explains.

The Peterson's are now looking to give back to the organization that gave their family hope and Jack a fighting chance.

"For myself and my family, we are going to be lifetime blood donors now because we were given a second chance with Jack because there were blood donors that gave to my little boy," Peterson shares.

The Help Jack Give Back Blood Drive is March 11th and 12th at the Valentine Building in Pocatello, Idaho.

Their goal is 124 units, potentially helping close to 400 people in need of blood or platelets.

And Amber tells me they already over the halfway mark, and even you at home can help!

"We want to give back, we took a lot of blood so we want to donate," Peterson explains. "So if people want to donate on those days and you know send us a picture of them donating for our Help Jack Give Back Drive, we would love to see those pictures."
