Canelo Alvarez is one of the big names in the boxing community. Still, renowned promoter Oscar De La Hoya didn’t hesitate to take a jibe at the Mexican superstar. The Golden Boy boss took a verbal shot at Alvarez during his ‘Clap Back Thursdays’ episode. De La Hoya belittled him for choosing Edgar Berlanga for his next title defense.
The fight between the boxers is set to take place on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Many believe Canelo is diminishing his legacy as a fighter. Even his former promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, slams him for not picking up a fight similar to his stature. The Golden Boy boss took no time to share his views on Canelo’s next matchup.

De La Hoya believes Berlanga is overhyped and not deserving of a title shot against Alvarez. He also mentioned that many fans are beginning to boycott the Mexican superstar for ducking a fight with David Benavidez.
The 27-year-old American even moved up to 175 lbs since Alvarez refused to fight. As such, Benavidez has given up on pursuing a match with Alvarez. De La Hoya also stated that the Mexican will require some luck to get the PPV numbers, as his boxing event coincides with a UFC event on September 14th.
Canelo spent a part of his career fighting under Golden Boy Promotions. However, as of now, both Canelo and De La Hoya share bad blood between them. In his last fight, the Mexican defeated a boxer from the Golden Boy stable, Jaime Munguia. Following that win, he taunted Benavidez to fight him. However, he ultimately picked Berlanga as his next opponent.
Edgar Berlanga responds to all the critics ahead of his fight against Canelo Alvarez
Canelo’s upcoming opponent, Edgar Berlanga, is on an undefeated run in his pro boxing career. As for his records, the Puerto Rican-born American fighter is 22-0 as of now. Interestingly, Berlanga made headlines a few years back for biting one of his opponents in a fight. However, later, he issued a statement apologizing for that uncanny behavior.
Berlanga considers his upcoming fight against Canelo one of his career’s biggest fights. On the other hand, Canelo, being a boxing legend, is at the receiving end for picking the 27-year-old as his opponent. Following verbal bashing and trolling, Berlanga took a stand for the fight. He lashed out at all the haters via an Instagram story.
